2005 & 2009 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classe at Farr Vintners

2009 Vintage Clare

Chateau Angélus 2009 95 2018-35 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé The black fruits on the nose are sweet quite rich with good depth. The start of the palate is fresher with some quite severe tannins but the mid palate has richness with a mix of bramble and black cherry. The flavours last well and although a bit closed on the finish there is a lot more to come out with patience.

Château Beau Séjour Bécot 2009 93 2016-30 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé Although the nose is firm there is an attractive aromatic slightly herbal character to the black fruits. The fresh start to the palate gives way to a richer suppler feel in the middle and although towards the back it is still quite firm the finish has a good depth of sweet fruit.

Château Beausejour Duffau Lagrrosse 2009 92 2015-28 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé There is a lot of sweet ripe fruit on the nose fleshy black plum. Although sweet fruited there is some balancing freshness yet towards the back the richness and ripeness of the fruit dominates fleshy voluptuous with a good depth of flavour on the finish.

Château Canon 2009 94 2018-35 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé The mix of fruits on the nose is rich deep with lots of power. The palate has richness depth of flavour quite chunky the sweetness filling out mid and back palate. There are layers of flavour the fresher cherry backed by powerful black fruits. The finish has a mineral mix a slightly fresher feel.

Château Cheval Blanc 2009 97 2017-38 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé Behind the fragrant red and black mix on the nose there is a lot of concentrated fruit. The mid palate has sweetness depth concentration with some spicy black flavours sweetness yet freshness and fragrance. The back palate and finish are firm a touch dry at the moment but there is enough rich fruit to fill it out with time.

Clos Fourtet 2009 93 2018-32 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé Both nose and palate have depth, power and richness lots of fleshy black fruits. The tannins feel ripe the mid palate supple fleshly sweet black plum with just a touch of liquorice. The acidity comes through towards the back so the finish feels fresher but there is enough sweet fruit to overtake it with time.

Château Figeac 2009 92 2020-40 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé The nose is stylish red fruited but quite firm. The palate has sweetness yet freshness but the tannins are quite obvious at the moment all very firm. There is some riper fruit at the back then red fruits come through and give a fresher a more elegant feel on the finish.

Château La Gaffelière 2009 93 2016-35 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé The nose has charm quite light and fragrant but at the back there is the power and richness of black cherry. The palate has some nice ripe flavours richness of fruit with quite supple tannins and a good depth of flavour. Although towards the back it is a bit fresher the finish has black fruited power.

Château Pavie 2009 88 2020-35 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classe The nose is fresh quite firm with some obvious oak. The palate has a mix of flavours at first quite sticky sweet but then very firm in the middle with rather abrasive tannins. Red fruits dominate towards the back and although there is some sweetness the finish is firm quite dry and slightly dusty.

Château Pavie Macquin 2009 89 2017-30 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé The firm red fruited nose has a herbal note. Although on the mid palate there are very obvious, hard rather unforgiving tannins towards the back there is some sweetness a savoury black fruited richness. The finish tends to let it down quite tannic firm a touch astringent and lacking real depth of fruit.

Château Troplong-Mondot 2009 93 2016-32 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé Ripe black plum enriches the nose and fleshes out the palate. The mid palate has lots of ripe fruit a nice weight of black cherry some dark chocolate. Towards the back it is fresher with more of a red fruit character which gives a lighter slightly drier feel on the finish.

Château Trottevielle 2009 90 2017-30 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé

The nose is firm with lots of black cherry and bilberry. There is more weight at the start of the palate but towards the back it is lighter and although there is some sweet fruit the tannins are firm with the acidity towards the back quite obvious and the finish just a bit astringent.

2005 Vintage Claret

Chateau Angélus 2005 96 2014-30 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé The rich fruit is balanced by freshness an attractive mix of flavours. The mid palate is sweet with ripe flavours rounded tannins a good depth of flavour the sweetness of fruit giving richness on the mid palate. Black plum fleshiness is balanced by slightly fresher cherry layers of flavour a lovely complexity.

Château Beau Séjour Bécot 2005 93 2014-25 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé The nose is firm quite intense with sweetness at the back a touch of black truffle richness. The sweet fruit at the start of the palate is tempered by fresher red fruits an attractive mix of flavours with a slightly herbal twist and some oak spice. The finish has a good weight of rich fruit.

Château Beausejour Duffau Lagrrosse 2005 91 2017-30 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé The rich and ripe sweet fruit on the nose gives way to fresher red fruits. There is a nice mix of flavours on the palate which starts with fair weight but the ripe feel is underpinned by freshness quite firm tannins that leave the finish a bit tight and slightly short.

Château Canon 2005 92 2015-30 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé The nose has fragrance elegance lots of charm with the freshness balanced by richness. The sweet mid palate has more of a red fruit character with just a hint of spice stylish and quite light. The mix of flavours gives complexity and the back palate has a stylish elegance.

Château Cheval Blanc 2005 96 2018-32 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé There is sweet fruit on the nose fragrant stylish not opulent an attractive mix of red and black fruits. Although the fruit is ripe there is underlying freshness good structure with ripe tannins style an underlying power yet stylish elegance. The back palate and finish have balance, harmony and touch of spice.

Clos Fourtet 2005 95 2018-30 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé The nose has richness depth of fruit and ripeness of flavour. There is an underlying power on the palate voluptuous rich fleshy sweet black fruits yet freshness. The back palate has depth ripe fruit and rounded tannins with a fleshy black fruited power on the finish.

Château Figeac 2005 95 2020-38 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé There are some brooding black fruits on the nose but it is very firm and quite tight. The start of the palate is firm with fresh red fruits but the mid palate has more depth more black fruits showing. The finish is long with lots of lingering fruit.

Château La Gaffelière 2005 92 2017-30 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé The nose is firm a bit tight fresh fruited. The palate has depth lots of powerful flavours chewy chunky with behind the firmness some sweetness lots of black cherry. The back palate is a bit tight at the moment but there is sweet fruit underneath.

Château Pavie 2005 84 2017-32 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé There are black fruits on the nose but it is very firm. The palate has a gamey fat slightly alcoholic dark fruit character the cassis underpinned by fresher red. The tannins are obvious drying the back palate and leaving the finish very tight.

Château Pavie Macquin 2005 82 2016-28 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé The nose is very tight hard and tannic. Although there are some black fruits on the start of the palate the tannins tend to take over drying the fruit and giving a chewy astringent bitterness towards the back. It has little charm.

Château Troplong-Mondot 2005 93 2015-25 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé The nose is sweet fruited with a good depth of flavour just slightly hot. The sweet black fruited middle is enriched by dark chocolate and liquorice lots of ripe flavours. Towards the back there is some freshness quite stylish with a nice long finish.

Château Trottevielle 2005 91 2015-25 Saint-Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé

There are fresh red fruits on the nose but richer sweet quite intense flavours on the palate. The mid palate feels firmer and although towards the back it is richer with a nice mix of red and black fruits the back palate and finish are leaner drier and lacking a bit of length.
